Yeast is an ancient partner to humans, helping us make wines, beer, breads and countless other foods. Yeast converts the sugars of wine grapes into alcohol and carbon dioxide through the process of fermentation. However, the prevalence of genetically modified yeast, and yeasts grown on GMO ingredients are common additives to the winemaking process. Moreover, some wineries believe that GMO-free starts in a vineyard wherein the soils have not been chemically fertilized, and cultivates vines grown on their own rootstock- not genetically mutated hybrids of different species. Below is a list of wines crafted from non-GMO yeast during the fermentation process, and wines that utilize other GMO-free winemaking practices:
