Vista del Rey translates in Spanish to “View of the King” and if you ever spend any time at Dave King’s winery up above San Marcos Road on the most northeasterly portion of Paso Robles’s West Side, you’ll know what we’re talking about. The views are absolutely gorgeous, but the wines are even better.
Situated around 800 feet above the valley floor, Vista Del Rey Vineyards enjoys the same heat that bakes the vines of the East Side of Paso Robles but also gets more fog and cooling breezes due to its West Side location. Dave only grows two varietals on his majestic property: Barbera, the rich, zesty, Piedmontese favorite, and Zinfandel, whose planting at Vista Del Rey predates Dave’s purchase of the property in 1993. Vista Del Rey only produces four wines from these two red varietals every vintage: single varietal versions of each grape, a Zinfandel-Barbera blend called Zin-Bera, and a Barbera dessert wines. Quality will also trump quantity.
