For twenty years, Augie Hug has been in a cult figure in Paso Robles. Based out of a small industrial park on Tuley Court, wedged between Union Road and Highway 46 East, Augie launched his first vintage in 1994 with 87 cases of Syrah, and today only produces 1500 total cases of wine, making it one of the oldest urban boutique wineries in California. Hug Cellars was also one of the first garagiste wineries in California, owning no vines of his own but sourcing all of his grapes from premium vineyards in Santa Maria, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Monterey County.
From crisp rosés and rich Viogniers, to intense Zinfandels, powerful Bordeaux blends, zesty and bright Rhone varietals, and several different blended and single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, Augie picks and chooses the vineyards and grapes he wants discerningly - and in some vintages produces lots as small as 25 cases. Everything is handcrafted to his exacting standards, and with such limited supply, superlative vineyards, and Augie’s steady experienced hand, it’s no wonder he’s been a cult figure in Paso Robles for the past two decades, and it’s also no surprise why his wines are in such high demand.
